Easily assembled Reading Nook Bench for family and kids

Posted by admin on

Marie-Claude shares her reading nook bench made from 4 IKEA KALLAX units. An easy DIY with a bit of sewing involved. (Unless you hate sewing. In such a case, there’s Etsy.)

It can even work as a daybed for a little guest.

Read on for Marie-Claude’s simple tutorial.

IKEA items used:

2 KALLAX shelving units (2×4) — as bookshelves
2 KALLAX shelving units (1×4) — to form the bench
Drawer inserts for KALLAX
Door inserts for KALLAX
DRÖNA boxes

Other materials:

Foam and fabric to make the cushions
Plywood board
Hardware to fix together the KALLAX

How to hack a reading nook bench with storage

Assemble all the KALLAX units.

Place them together on the floor, with the two 1×4 KALLAX units between the two 2×4 KALLAX bookcases in upright position

brackets join the KALLAX units together

Optional but you can fix all of the units together with different pieces of hardware — L-brackets or straight metal braces and screws. You can also use anything else you see fit to secure the units together.

Next, make the cushions for the bench.

We cut pieces of foam and sewed fabrics to make the covers. You can also get ready made cushions on Etsy.

Lastly, we attached the cushions to plywood plank to fix them at each places — the bench, the sides and the back.

And there you go! The perfect spot for family relaxation time with lots of storage space for toys and books.

Other optional pieces would be a reading lamp to supplement natural light, throw pillows and blankets to up the comfort level of the bench seat.  And a rug to complete a cozy reading nook.
