Dezeen promotion: modern design meets function in our latest competition, where Dezeen has partnered with Danish furniture brand Fritz Hansen to give away a shelving unit from its Planner collection.

Posted by admin on

Originally designed by Paul McCobb in the 1950s and recently reissued by Fritz Hansen, the Planner shelving displays the late American industrial-designer's characteristic functional, mid-century style.

The shelving unit is made from oak wood and powder-coated steel and is available in three heights of 84, 123, and 165 centimetres – each with different shelving configurations.

One reader will win a Planner shelving unit from the collection in the size of their choice.

Durable powder-coated steel rods in a matte finish are welded and joined by hand to comprise the shelving's structure.

Corners are gently rounded to "soften the overall expression", with the curved metal outlines complementing the bevelled edges of the natural oak shelves.

The curved oak edges are designed to sit flush with the metal frame, a feature described by the brand as a "small but significant detail".

Planner shelving was designed to be suitable for both private and professional working and living spaces.

The flexible furniture item can act as a regular bookshelf or display unit, or even as a room-partition wall if multiple units are placed adjacent to one another.

In the two taller styles, a pair of diagonal rods intersect to create a statement cross shape behind one side of the unit, creating a visual detail in the negative space as well as lending additional support to the double-height shelving space.

McCobb's timeless, "no-nonsense" design was influenced by the linear shapes of makers from the Bauhaus school, who were known for their simple, graphic lines and forms.

"Planner shelving balances McCobb's signature graphic expression with Fritz Hansen's classical craftsmanship skills," said Christian Andresen, head of design at the brand.

"It's elegant in its simplicity, yet it unashamedly commands attention in a room," he continued.

Based in Allerød, Denmark, Fritz Hansen offers a Nordic take on homeware necessities that elevate functional everyday items with good design.

Its furniture and lighting collections can be seen in private and professional interiors worldwide, from homes to offices and retail spaces.

The shelving unit joins a coffee table, in three shapes, a magazine holder, a swivelling table-top mirror, a tall wall mirror with marble shelves and a cylindrical countertop lamp on a tripod base, to complete the Planner furniture series.

The winner will be able to pick one Planner shelving unit at the height of their choosing: either 165, 123, or 84 centimetres.

To find out more, visit the Fritz Hansen website.

Competition closes 13 November 2019. One winner will be selected at random and notified by email, and his or her names will be published at the top of this page.
